Measurements, Sizes, and Spacing Conventions
Home improvement projects run on a standardized system of measurements — but those standards aren't always intuitive. Here are the ones you'll encounter most.
Nominal vs. Actual Size
Lumber is sold by nominal size — the name given before the wood is dried and planed — but the piece you take home is smaller. A 2×4 actually measures approximately 1.5 inches by 3.5 inches. A 1×6 is closer to 0.75 inches by 5.5 inches. Always use actual dimensions when calculating material needs or cutting to fit.
On Center (OC)
On center, abbreviated OC, refers to the distance measured from the center of one framing member to the center of the next. Wall studs are typically placed 16 inches OC in residential construction; some walls use 24 inches OC. Knowing your stud spacing matters for hanging heavy items or planning structural cuts.
Linear Foot vs. Square Foot
A linear foot measures length only — useful for trim, pipe, and molding. A square foot measures area (length × width) — used for flooring, tile, and paint. Mixing these up when buying materials is a very common and costly mistake.
Coverage and Waste Factor
Most surface materials — tile, flooring, paint — require you to order more than your calculated square footage. A standard waste factor of 10% accounts for cuts, breakage, and irregular room shapes. For diagonal tile layouts or rooms with many angles, bump that to 15–20%.
Load-bearing wall
A wall that supports the weight of the structure above it, including floors, roofs, or other walls. Removing or modifying a load-bearing wall requires engineering review and typically a permit.
Nominal size
The labeled dimensions of lumber as sold, which are larger than the actual finished dimensions after drying and planing. Always verify actual size before cutting or planning.
On center (OC)
A measurement convention indicating the distance from the center of one structural element to the center of the next, most commonly used for wall studs and floor joists.
Sheathing
Structural panels — usually plywood or OSB — attached to wall framing or roof trusses to add rigidity and serve as a base for siding, roofing, or other cladding.
Joist
A horizontal framing member that supports floors or ceilings. Joists run parallel to each other and are sized based on span length and load requirements.
Sill plate
The horizontal piece of lumber at the very bottom of a wall frame that sits directly on the foundation. It must be pressure-treated because it contacts concrete.
R-value
A measure of thermal resistance — how well insulation slows heat transfer. Higher R-values mean better insulating performance. Recommended R-values vary by climate zone and location in the home.
Flashing
Thin strips of metal or membrane installed at joints and transitions — such as where a roof meets a wall — to redirect water away from vulnerable areas and prevent leaks.
Common Material Types and What They're Used For
Hardware stores stock dozens of materials, and not all of them are interchangeable. Here's a practical breakdown of the ones you'll encounter most in typical home projects.
Drywall (Gypsum Board)
Standard drywall is ½ inch thick and used for interior walls and ceilings. ⅝-inch Type X drywall is fire-resistant and required in garages and utility rooms in many building codes. Moisture-resistant drywall (sometimes called greenboard) is used in bathrooms, though cement board is preferred behind tile in wet areas.
Plywood vs. OSB
Plywood is made from thin wood veneers glued in alternating grain directions, giving it strength and resistance to warping. OSB (oriented strand board) is made from compressed wood strands and is typically less expensive. Both are used for subfloors and sheathing; plywood is generally preferred where moisture is a concern.
Pressure-Treated Lumber
Lumber labeled PT or pressure-treated has been infused with preservatives to resist rot and insects. It's required for any wood that contacts concrete, soil, or exterior moisture — like deck posts and sill plates. Don't substitute untreated lumber in these applications.
Caulk vs. Sealant vs. Grout
Caulk is a flexible compound used to fill gaps and joints where surfaces meet — around tubs, windows, and trim. Sealant is similar but typically refers to products designed for specific surfaces like concrete or stone. Grout fills the joints between tiles and comes in sanded (for wider joints) and unsanded (for joints under ⅛ inch) varieties.
